How Does a Screw Work?

• Simple Machine: In physical science terms, a screw is one of six classical simple machines. One of its components is another simple machine--an inclined plane. An inclined plane is a flat surface whose edges are at differing heights. The threads of a screw are made of one long inclined plane which is wound around a shank or cylinder (or merely wound in a cylindrical shape, as in the case of a corkscrew). The inclination of the plane allows it to fasten more easily as well as improving the holding power of the screw
• Wedge: The tip of the screw is often pointed, which causes it to act as a wedge. A wedge is another type of simple machine, one which operates by separating objects, creating space between them. The cylindrical wedge tip of a screw creates a hole in a piece of wood (or other material) for the screw to be wound into. The sharper the tip of the screw, the less force it takes for it to create a hole
• Threads: Once the tip of the screw has created a small hole, the threads of the screw weave into the object to be fastened.
