External Hard Drive Enclosure Instructions:
Hard drives are a great way to store your data, but it seems like you can never have enough of them. One way to multiply your hard drive storage is to take an unused internal hard drive and put it into an external enclosure to make it an external hard drive. With just a little investment in time and resources, you can re-purpose an old drive and upgrade your system at the same time
Instructions- Open the box in which your external enclosure came and lay out all the parts. Depending on your drive, you should have a ribbon cable, a power cable, a cable to connect to your computer (e.g., USB, firewire or SATA), the case itself and screws. Some pieces may not be necessary for your installation
- Test fit your hard drive into the enclosure. Make sure that the drive fits smoothly but snugly between the rails and that the screw-holes in the rails line up with the holes in the sides of the drive. If you have an IDE drive, you will need to set the jumper configuration. The jumper is a small plastic connector that crossed two pins on the back of the drive near the power connection. Check the documentation that came with your drive enclosure to see the required jumper settings. Use the needle-nose pliers to gently remove the jumper. Always replace the jumper by hand and don't use a tool, as the pins are easy to bend
- Plug in the ribbon cable to the back of the drive. Make sure that it is oriented correctly (there will be a missing pin on the drive that corresponds to a blank spot on the cable connector or the ribbon will be keyed to only fit in one direction). Do not force the cable as you gently but firmly plug it in
- Insert the power cable into the back of the drive. Make sure that the connector is firmly seated
- Screw the drive to the rails to secure it. Do not over-tighten the screws. Re-attach the outer cover of the enclosure by screwing it in place (if necessary)
- Connect the drive to power (if necessary) and to your computer. Windows should automatically detect it
How to Install a Hard Drive Enclosure:
The use of a hard drive enclosure allows a computer user to add additional hard drive space, using either a new or an existing spare hard drive. Installing a hard drive enclosure for your computer is simple and easy for both desktop and laptop systems. Hard drive enclosures are available for both Windows and Mac-based systems
Instructions- Insert the hard drive into the enclosure following the manufacturer's instructions. For many enclosures, this is accomplished by attaching the supplied adapter to the hard drive, sliding the drive into the enclosure and locking the end caps in place. Laptop drive enclosures may have small screws that hold the end caps in place
- Place the included driver disk into your CD or DVD drive to install the drivers needed for the USB drive to recognize the hard drive enclosure. If you are using Windows 2000 or later, you can skip this step, as Windows will recognize the drive attached to the USB port. A Mac will also automatically configure the drive
- Connect the supplied USB cable to the hard drive enclosure
- Connect the USB cable to the USB port on your computer. The computer should immediately recognize that the drive has been connected. For older Windows systems, you may need to shut down before you connect to the USB port and reboot after the drive is connected
- Format the drive, if necessary. You can do this on a Windows machine easily by clicking on "My Computer" and highlighting the external hard drive letter. Right-click and choose "Format" from the options. If the hard drive has been used previously, formatting will not be necessary unless you want to remove the files on the drive. If the drive has never been used, it will need to be formatted to match your operating system before use
- Use the hard drive in the same way you use would use a floppy drive, internal hard drive or CD/DVD drive
