How to Choose Bicycle Headlights:

• Determine whether you're going to be riding your bike mostly at night or during the day. If you're going to be doing a substantial amount of night riding you'll want a high-powered bike headlight; otherwise a front-mounted bike safety light should be sufficient. This is also when you should compare the various bulb options; in order of brightness from least to most they are LED, halogen and HID
• Decide whether you want a single-bulb design or a double-bulb design. If you're going to be doing a lot of riding in variable conditions and want to switch between the equivalent of a car's high- and low-beam headlights, a double-bulb design will be worth the extra cost. Otherwise, a single bulb design usually suffices, in addition to being smaller, lighter and cheaper
• Compare battery options. Rechargeable batteries are more environmentally friendly and will eventually, over time, save you money--but may command more of an initial investment than lights powered by disposable batteries. The two types of rechargeable batteries, SLA and Ni-Cad, have differences in their operating characteristics. SLA batteries will slowly dim as they lose power, giving you a visual cue that it's time to recharge them. Ni-Cad batteries will continue to work at the same level of output until they suddenly quit when it's time for a recharge
